Samuel Goodwin of Lynn Mass. - Lynn's first Florist - along with Henry Fairchilds, and George Gilmore of Lynn and N. J. Nicholson of Gorham NH set out to Alaska in 1898 to "make their fortunes". Mr. Nicholson returned home to attend to family issues. Plagued by bad weather, early winter, crushing Yukon River ice flows and then finding the steam vessel I.X.L. was under-powered, the expedition turned sour.
